Ever since I could, I’ve written - because it is something I can’t not do. I write when I need to think something through, I write when I am distressed, or hurt, or angry, or moved, or find something extremely beautiful or important. Writing has always been the place where I go to find ways out; it enables me to hold out, to hold on, and to dream.

Because of capitalism, I’ve attempted to write in exchange for money. Such work has often felt worthwhile and fulfilling, and I’ve been glad to have it. I feel so grateful to have been entrusted to write many of the stories I have done, over the years. In doing so, I have also met some truly inspiring people. All too often though, being a writer-for-hire is a slog, with meagre-to-nil financial compensation.

Having worked as a freelance journalist for almost a decade and having recently published my first book, Radical Intimacy, my writing practice is transforming. As I gradually re-orient myself towards training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, I hope to bring more of myself to my writing, to be more myself as a writer.

This Substack will be a space for the writing closest to my heart. I intend to share reflections, fiction, essays, reviews - and, if people reach out, perhaps a Radical Intimacy -themed advice column! Where paid writing work can box writers and writing in, in this space I want to write more freely and creatively, to nurture experiments.

I will share some free-to-access pieces, and others will be for paid subscribers only (if you would like to access the latter but cannot afford to pay, let me know). If you appreciate my writing and can afford to do so, please consider subscribing to support my work - I’ll be so grateful!
